Rainbow ball and party invitation notecard

Tonight I learned how to create a notecard, created my second ever object and made it so that the notecard displays when the object is touched. The notecard is a party invitation to the LINT end of year party. The object is a HUGE tie-dyed sphere at the door to the building.

Hypatia and I blew our party honkers and waved the sparklers that came out of a party box I found in my inventory. I just couldn’t make the box give out the party invitation. …Yet.

Events calendar for Info Islands

New librarians tours, art displays, seminars, lectures and “how to make objects” classes are some of the events held on the Info Islands. To keep track of them, use the Calendar linked from the SL Library Worksite.

This event looks interesting for us, but I’m usually asleep at 2:30 am.

Cybrary City - Welcome Ceremony
Wed Dec 6 11:30am - Wed Dec 6 1:30pm (SL Time)
Open Air Conference Center - Cybrary City

LINTy penguins

Just so I could practice linking objects, I’ve placed two penguins on coffee tables in the library building. Click on the one with orange wings and you get a link to LINT. Click on the one with purple wings and you go here, to VLINT. Click on the bookshelf to their left and you go to Libraries Australia. They all ask you to touch them. All are temporary unless someone else gets attached to them.

BrianA Corleone from Kansas Virtual Branch Library next door changed the wing colours for me, and patiently watched while I fiddled with them to get them just so. Thank you.

Curious Forager has also put some signs on the walls of the building that go to other useful Australian sites. There is one on the wall in the snapshot.

BTW. If anyone has worked out how to take a snapshot without including your av’s head in the way, I’d like to know.

New SL co-ordinates for Australian libraries

Cybrary City was moved this weekend to a better neighbourhood. Linden Labs had auctioned the land around Cybrary City,Eduisland and Info Island to people who wanted to host sex parties and a few businesses. Not really compatible.

Our new co-ordinates are: 210,70,24.

Prim primer

So that more avatars can fit on the island, each building has a limit of prims (or basic shapes) that are allowed in it. Here’s a Prim Primer that was left at the doorstep of our library last week.

Hypatia Arcadia and Emerald Dumont have been doing a bit of “prim cleaning” and changed the decor a bit to lower prim versions (the sandcastle was 122 prims….and we have a limit of 274) . If you have put a high prim object in the building, can you please think about whether a lower prim one will be better?

Oh yeah, I’ve asked Walty to take the Little Brown Cat back too.

We thought this might be helpful to those of you moving in :) Please contact Lorelei Juneot or Abbey Zenith with any questions.
=============================
Moving In a Prim Primer: The quick guide to setting up your area or your library.
=============================
Objects in Second Life are made up of what are known as primitives or prims for short. Each object you see is made up of prims. Sims (areas of SL) have a limit to the number of prims that can be tolerated by a server. This is one of the reasons that Sims are divided up into parcels.

Your parcel will have a prim limit. To find out what your prim limit is, right click on your land, go to About Land and then click on the Objects tab. You will see the number of Primitives Parcel Supports (maximum you can have on your parcel) and below it you will see Primitives On Parcels (what you actually have).

To find out how many prims are in a piece of furniture or object you want to use, right click on the object and go to Edit (if you see a tiny pop up with a button that says More, click it to expand the window). On the General tab about middle way down the pop up window , you should see the number of primitives. It will say something like “1 Object, 5 Primitives”.

Some of the smallest objects on SL can have a high prim count. To learn more about prims and how to make objects you can take one of the classes that Eiseldora Reisman is offering. As always, feel free to contact me or Lori if you need help :)

Also, to cut down on lag the Land Manager, Brackish Ludwig has asked that we not use any particle producing objects, except on special occasions.

BrianA Corleone, and his dragon Smidge, have built us a Yellow Brick Road to follow back to the Kansas Library next door. That’s him being a Tinman.

LINT end-of-year party in SL. 13 Dec.

Here’s the email that Con and I sent out last week to advertise the SL party.

The Australian libraries blog, librariesinteract.info, is hosting an end-of year party in Second Life on 13th December, 6pm to 8pm Western Australian time. [This is 1am San Francisco time; San Francisco time also being Second Life time.]

Second Life is a virtual world, with a population of over 1 million, in which large companies, schools and universities (IBM, Dell, Harvard) have set up shop. Reuters newsagency has its own correspondent there. According to a September 2006 Popular Science article, Second Life, through currency trading, shopping and land sales, has a GDP of $64 Million. Recently, Australian Libraries were given a free building for a year on Cybrary City, courtesy of Talis and the Alliance Library System in return for 2 hours per week work on library services for SL residents.

The party will include a tour of Info Island and Info Island II by Lori Bell from Alliance Library Systems. We will follow the yellow brick road from the Oz library to the Kansas State Library Virtual Branch next door. Then, back to our building to hang out… dance on the dance floor, snare some cyber snacks, and go easy on the virtual alcoholic beverages.

You can join in virtually from your own PC, or come and look over our shoulders in real life. If you join in virtually, it would be a good idea to check out Second Life before the event:

1. Go to the Second Life website.
2. Check the systems requirements.
3. Go to the join up page and choose one of the family names offered..and make up your first name.
4. You will be asked for your credit card details, but do not have to give them.
5. Download the Second Life client to your PC.
6. Choose how you’d like your avatar (representation in SL) to look.
7. Enter…explore.
8. Teleport to just outside our building at: 207, 68, 23. (Often passersby can help you out to do this) Alternatively, we can teleport you to our building, if you send a message.

For further details, please contact Con Wiebrands (flexnib at gmail dot com) or Kathryn Greenhill (sirexkat at gmail dot com). If you are already exploring Second Life and would like to meet up, our SL names are Paradoxa Kurrajong (Con) and Emerald Dumont (Kathryn) - feel free to IM us!

Hope to see you on Info Island!

Kathryn and Con
